Definition 

A motif, pronounced mōˈtēf or mo'teef, is a short succession of notes producing a single impression; a brief melodic or rhythmic formula out of which longer passages are developed. Also, it is said to be the shortest subdivision of a theme or a phrase that still maintains its identify as a musical idea. 

I believe we all hear music as we go through our daily routines and schedules. Even without the iPod airpods in our ears! Stop and think about it for a moment. What is the song or songs that run through your head each day or even every hour?! Now think about how fast you recognize the song when it starts to play. How many notes until you recognize a song; one, two, three, or four? One of the most famous motifs is four notes! Yes, only four notes and still recognized in milliseconds. If you haven't already, listen to the very beginning of the video, which linked to this article. Did you recognize the music? If so, how fast did you guess the answer? Well, you guessed it; Beethoven’s fifth symphony in c minor. 

With that concept in mind (and this melody repeating in my head), I wrote the first movement of Symphony, No. 1 in C# minor. For those who are in IT and Dev, C# will have a totally different meaning. LOL. However, using the motif concept, it was fun to create something unique and inspired by the style of Haydn!
